SEO. You’ve no doubt heard about it. If you have a website, you’ve probably had someone along the way offer you SEO tips. BUT…Who needs SEO, right? Depending on who’s giving you the advice, their suggestions could increase your website traffic and improve the effectiveness of your website or they could lead you down a dead end road – you’d be surprised how many people (including some self-proclaimed SEO experts) who give out advice that is either grossly outdated or otherwise questionable.
But the question of how to go about improving your search engine rankings can wait for now. The question you have on your mind is whether you need to worry about search engine optimization in the first place.
It’s a good question.
How Does SEO Work in Your Benefit?
The basic goal of any SEO strategy is to make sure that people who are looking for the products, services, cause, etc. that you represent find your website first. There are lots of things that go into this – everything from the way your website is designed to how your webpages are put together, strategic placement of SEO keywords, use of on-site and off-site SEO blogs and more.
Here’s the thing – if you have a website, you obviously want it to be found. If you’re like most businesses or organizations, there are two types of people you want to be able to find and access your website:
- Those who are specifically looking for YOUR company or organization.
- Those who are making a general search for companies that offer the types of services or products that you offer.
The first group will generally find your website as long as they know the name of your company – or better yet, actually know your website address. You don’t generally need an SEO strategy to reach those people. They’re looking specifically for you and they will generally find you.
If you want to reach the second group of people, however, effective SEO techniques are absolutely critical. Why? Because, quite simply, the overwhelming majority of them are going to do a Google (or Yahoo, Bing, Safari, or whatever) search for whatever they’re looking for. If your website is not on the front page, you have almost zero chance that they will ever find you. Frankly, you want to be in the top three or four choices to have a legitimate shot at earning their business.
Do I Need an SEO Audit?
If you’re getting all the business off your website that you want and need and you only want your website to reach people who are specifically looking for your business, then you don’t necessarily need to employ an SEO strategy (though it still wouldn’t hurt). If, however, you want to reach people who are looking for your services, an SEO audit by an LA SEO company can show you where improvements could be made to improve your website.
